It's the last Bank Holiday Saturday before that long wait 'til August and I'll let you into a secret; we weren't at Bosco's to hear a DJ that threw out hard core trance, garage or hip hop. We wanted a soundtrack to our Saturday that wasn't too intrusive. We were at Bosco's because we wanted to kick back to some amazing tunes from The Good Life DJ, enjoy the ambient chattiness, have some good conversations and do all of that in warm and stylish surroundings drinking some 'expensive-for-a-treat' wine.
We were not disappointed. The Good Life started early on with a nod to Gil Scott-Heron's legacy, taking us back to those unmistakable echos of 70's and 90's soulful jazz funk. Back to back tunes filled of rollin' fat and funky bass lines gave us a mix that was so good that my ears were half on the conversation and half on the pleasure of the music. You know you've got a good DJ who's sussed the crowd when you want to ask: "Man, that one was good! What was that track again?"
By the time the lights had subtly dimmed further, Bosco's Lounge had filled up. Smiling staff were serving girls in killer outfits who were chatting to stylish guys and swirling glasses of freshly mixed cocktails in their hands. Mixing from the back of the Lounge, The DJ effortlessly headed us onto a different style but oh-so-cleverly-kept the funky feel of the early evening.
Working the Bank Holiday spirit, more upbeat and fast tracks were building us up towards midnight. There was an occasional student classic like Candy Stanton's ' You've Got The Love' , 'Where Love Lives' and the dark Van Helden garage version of 'Spin Spin Sugar' to which you could almost hear everyone in the now packed Bosco's Lounge saying : " Yess !! ". Heading through the last hours towards the end of the night, The Good Life DJ was unstoppable, keeping the groove, rhythm and momentum alive.
It all came to an end too soon. Bosco's was filled up with partying people. We'd had a 4 hour soundtrack to our Bank Holiday Saturday where not one track jarred or ruined the happy ambience. At the end, the DJ was still satisfying those who loved the early set and Bosco's had ticked all the boxes. The mix was the ultimate party night you want to hear again - can it be download-able in a 'Good Life Compilation' please ! For us though, mission accomplished. We went home basking in warm glow of The Good Life and on a brilliant Bank Holiday high.
