Maple Village in Surbiton rocked mid week when Undersouled gave a feel good night of storming classics. If you haven’t seen Undersouled before then prepare yourself for a good time. The vocal greats Janine Coombs delivers with her tremendous voice had the guys in The Antelope asking the girls for a dance and the crowd whooping and clapping for more.
Undersouled gave us every classic track we could wish for. We heard 20 hits. Yes, 20!! Take a deep breath, this is a musical powerhouse of a gig taking you through songs you know so well from the 50s right through to the naughties.
Janine Coombes’ voice is as clear as a bell and as soulful as hell. We were treated to “Empire State Of Mind”, “Mercy”, “ Rehab “ and “ Twist and Shout “, “ Jolene “ and many, many more. Then Undersouled gave us an encore of “ I Saw Her Standing There “ and then yet another encore, which was whistled and cheered for by everyone – the ultimate crowd pleasing favourite “ I Will Survive “.
When asked how Undersouled got to sound so good, they counted up using the fingers on all 4 pairs of hands and told me that they’ve got over 20 years of experience between them and it shows. These tracks are so well known there’s a danger it could sound old hat, but it doesn’t in the hands of this band. Using a mixture of acoustic and electric with percussion being played on a Cajon it sounds softer than a big band and the mix lets Janine’s vocal’s sing out and really be enjoyed.
These songs are not easy to deliver – you try to do it without mimicking Aretha, Duffy, Amy Winehouse or Donna Summer. Janine’s style is entirely Janine’s style and she never misses a note of those truly great numbers. She is the ultimate singers’ singer and the Undersouled guys; Jem, Gordon and Mark really know how to make these tracks sound funky, soulful and fresh.
Was it a success? Yes. So much so that Undersouled will be playing The Antelope again…this time don’t miss them and bring your friends because you’ll love them. Undersouled is a guaranteed good time…
